The Top 5 ‘Scent’ Definitions to Understand before Formulating.

Whether you want a formula ‘unscented’, or you prefer a combination of oils and fragrances, it’s important to understand the following definitions and clearly communicate with your formulator the path you want to take, before you formulate, that will fit within your brand philosophy.

UNSCENTED:

  • Essential Oils, Aromatics, Flavors, and/or Fragrances are NOT added to the formula
  • Scents from the raw ingredients may still be present in the formula, even if the product is classified as ‘unscented’
  • Popular direction for ‘Sensitive Skin’ formulas

ESSENTIAL OILS and AROMATICS:

  • Harvested straight from the plant and classified with the plant’s name (ex: Lavender Essential Oil)
  • Scent intensity of Essential Oils will rapidly fade overtime
  • Essential Oils may cause irritation to some skin types

NATURAL FRAGRANCES and FLAVORS:

  • Derived from natural resources, but are not Essential Oils
  • Scent intensity may fade overtime, but not as drastically as Essential Oils
  • Listed as ‘Fragrance’ in the Ingredient List

SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCE (FORMUALTED WITHOUT PHTHALATES):

  • Scent intensity is stable
  • No negative ‘phthalate’ press
  • Listed as ‘Fragrance’ in the Ingredient List

SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES:

  • Scent intensity is stable
  • Negative ‘phthalate’ press
  • Listed as ‘Fragrance’ in the Ingredient List.
